Used Meat Salesmen

[This a long and sordid story. Don't miss my March 30, 2011 update at the end of the post before the comment section]

This will turn out to be not Cooking Cheap. Maybe. Maybe not. I was nearly finished with the morning paper and the second cup of coffee when the front door bell rang. I was awake, I have no excuse. I’ll just post the story.

Young man at the door: “I represent mumble, mumble and we’re running a special to introduce us”. As it turns out, he’s from yummymeats.com, a website I had looked at a few weeks earlier when I saw the van driving around. Damn expensive meat.

For every vacuum cleaner salesman, there is a customer. I allowed YM (young man) to show me the box of steaks. It is good looking meat! Individually cryo-vacced and frozen and that appeals to a single person. YM did a a lot of selling. Buy this at the regular price, I’ll toss in the box of Pork.

“Let’s see the pork”…. “Nah. I don’t want the pork”. It might be perfect pork, but it didn’t make my juices run. I’m low and slow on pork.

OK, How about two boxes of steak for the price of one.

“I don’t have that much space in the freezer”

I’ll pack it in there for you.

“I’m single, I can’t eat that much”

I’ll sell the box of steaks for half price. $189!

“OK”

There was a lot of jive talk about guarantees and customer satisfactions, USDA and ratings and so on. It’s Choice, maybe prime here and there. It seemed like a acceptable deal so I bought it. $208 with the tax. It’s a lot of meat. Special occasion stuff, should I get so lucky. What’s the real price? I have a scale, a calculator and the time to figure it out.

The empty boxes weigh 6.5 oz. I measured the boxes and the purchase contains (minus the box weight)

  1. 8 peppered Sirloin steaks, 52 oz.
  2. 4 Bone in “prime rib” steaks, 52 oz.
  3. 8 Tenderloin Fillets, 53 oz
  4. 8 “Thin” NY strips, 52.5 oz
  5. 5 NY Strips, 62.75 oz
  6. 12 burger patties, 96 oz

That works out to be 23.0915 pounds more or less, or approximately $8/lb. Not really a bargain with all that hamburger in the mix (YM: “it’s chopped sirloin”). Full price ($389)would cause your heart to stop. Twice.

I got suckered. but not too badly, just slightly hosed. Let me have that modicum of dignity. Did I mention they are vac’ed and guaranteed for a year in the freezer!

I’ll be eating well. I hope.

[UPDATE 5/13/2009]
This thread just won’t die. I was contacted by [one of?] the owner of YummyMeats, Amanda. She wanted me to delete this post and all the comments. I said I’m not inclined to do that without a damn good reason. Several emails more occured. It was a respectful exchange of opinions but I learned some things you might want to know.

YummyMeats doesn’t actually buy the critters, slaughter them, package or grade them. That’s contracted out to their supplier. Which is exactly what happens at grocery stores and retail outlets across the globe. YummyMeats doesn’t want to share the details of their contract for what the meat has to be graded at. That secret is theirs to keep if they want.

YummyMeats’ chosen business model is door-to-door sales. That’s all. (logistically some one has to move the frozen goods around and paint the vans and so on but thats to support the door-to-door sales). If I understand correctly some (most?) of the sales force are contractors and not actual employees.

Some contractors are a little less honest than others when selling the product and I gather some aren’t so honest with the Yummy mothership. Think Avon or Mary Kay or Amway. They don’t make all the stuff in their own plants, they just distribute it to independent agents to sell.

Food is different from cosmetics. If you assume that all the meat is of the same quality leaving the plant (assume that for one paragraph), there’s still plenty of ways for an independent contractor to hurt the product — Thawed and refrozen too many times could do that.

I’m not saying my explantion is complete. It does explain everything reported in the comments below: The reported wide variations of product quality and the sales experience are odd enough to look into. How can it be so many things?

I’ll bet you can negoiate that independent contractor/sales agent down. Should you want to take your chances with the quality of the product.

Amanda, here’s a $300/hr business consultant tip: Manage your sales and distribution channel tighter and you’ll have fewer complaints to deal with and fewer customer reviews like I’ve accumulated. Also, don’t play the empathy and guilt cards when trying to remove a blogger’s post. It just annoys us and we write long updates to very old posts.

[Update Aug 8, 2009]
Here’s an interesting discovery. I”ve got at couple of YummyMeat’s steaks in the freezer, for over 3 years!. Thats well beyond anytime limit I’ve ever heard of. Once they hit that time limit, I kind of you know, just let them stay there. Those steaks are in some serious cyrovac, so maybe they’ll be OK.

I took out a Tenderloin Filet and defrost it in a sink of cold water for and hour or two. The steak looked fine when I got it out the plastic. A quick marinade of crushed garlic, salt and pepper and olive oil for 30 minutes and into a grill pan and it turned to be nice steak. No hint that it had been in the freezer so long.

I’m not suggesting anyone go three years, I’m only reporting that it didn’t kill me and I liked the steak.

[Update Mar 30, 2011]
I received a request from Yummy Meats’ attorney to delete a few comments that appears were from a competitor. I’m not inclined to spend my money defending some idiot commentators by hiring my own lawyer.

I am truly disappointed and pissed at Yummy Meats. It was I who emailed them that comments looked suspicious. Did I hear back from them? No, not until today, months later. It was I who did enough sleuthing to question the validity of the comments. Did they thank me? No. My error appears to be that I investigated some of the comments and edited them to suggest that they are not true claims. I’ll not make the mistake of being fair to YummyMeats again. Assholes.

I was sales person for the above. They claimed all natural product, but would NOT put that in writing? WHY NOT? Anyone else feel they’ve been scammed! For all comments please reply to the e-mail address above.

After using the meat (YUM), I thought I better share some observations.

I emailed Linda but she never responded.

Natural meat is different from organic or free range. All meat is natural. YummyMeat person didn’t claim free range or being fed just organic. At worst he hinted hormone free but we all know (except Linda) that all meat sold has been enhanced with marketing words. What I do remember is the claim that their closest competitor is Costco which has a good rep around here.

I’ve cooked a few of the cuts and they are good steaks. The “Chopped Beef Steak” (AKA hamburger, I’m not so high on, but that could be me. I will certainly eat them all.

Whether the price is right, that I can’t say. I don’t feel that bad now about what I paid. Hold out the for the “just for you half price” deal, though.

I suspect Linda has some other issues with the company to work through. Get your Natural Soy Burgers here! Free Range Soy Burgers? That would be something to see

I work for the Company YUMMY MEATS, and in defence to this company which is awesome by the way, they never have had a problem putting in writing that their meat is ALL NATURAL, in fact it is the first thing you see on their website above the logo, the meat is all natural and very delicious, I love working for this company YUMMY MEATS. This “LINDA BENJAMIN” never worked for the company, it is a fake name in order to avoid SLANDER CHARGES from the company, this person is probably Disgruntal because they could not keep up with their job. Also this “LINDA BENJAMIN” wants to know if anyone feels like they have been scammed, well the company has not gotten any such call but if ever so, the company has no problem refunding the customers money and picking up the product from their home. YUMMY MEATS
is a good company with a good reputation, and sometimes people just simply get jelious and try to say things that are not true!! Sincerely, Bosley.R.Ruckman

Why is Lina Benjamin up at 3:18 in the morning talking crap about a job He/She had, He/She should be sleeping so He/She can go to work in a few hours, I guess some people always look for an excuse why they can’t do a job or keep a job. Let me guess, it is the companys falt why you can’t work. Why Can’t Lazy Un-skilled people ever just admit that they do not want to work

  5. Cecil said:

    Yikes!

Not my problem if you and Linda disagree. If she exists. If you exist, Amanda, or is it Bosley? Or Linda? I can’t tell. You all sound like whacko’s and there is a speech pattern that hints that one person is scamming or spamming me and trying to be clever.

Until I hear back from one of you in email, you’re just whackos, pretending to not be whacked and making drama. Your comments say your whacked. I’n going to let them stand as your word have proceeded you.

  6. Anthony M Davis said:

Hey cecil I just want to let u know that Ron Bosley is a good friend of mine, and as a formoer employee of this company I have not heird of this linda either and I was working there till this June. The only problem that anyone really has a problem w/ is sticker shock but I gauruntee that u get ur moneys worth. I miss this company’s meat and even though I now live in Arkansas which is half way across the country I have seriously considered purchasing a package at full price just to have it because I miss it so much. I will always speak highly of this company and the truth is that there are a lot of companies out there that tell a lie and scam people w/ their product, which this company is not. if u wish to email me orf anyone for that matter email me at davisanthonym@yahoo.com, if u are wondering why I take my time to do this even when I am a former employer it is because when I return from college I would love for there to still be a yummy meats to work at. There meat is all natural in the sense that there are no hormones, dies, perservatives it is all natural meat, read your average steak at the grocery store and you will notice it will say up to 10% solution. Yummy meats have none of that the only reason it is not organic is that it is corn and grain fed, which makes the meat much more flavorful then organic. I would love to hear any questions and especially would love to hear from this mythical Linda Benjamin. I always have and always will stand up for this company.

    Some wrong info…..

Organic does not mean it was not ever fed grain……That is grassfat and even within the grass fat classification, you will find some exceptions to allowing grain….

I also sell a natural beef..Beef I raise myself….Where does Yummymeat source its meat? Olympia is a ways from the typical Beef production areas….

Also, saying there are no hormones in meat is a misnomer..All animals have glands that produce thier natural hormones for living…..Saying you sell meat from cattle that have never been given artificial hormones would be more accurate…..

Natural generally means there were no Hormones or Antibiotics given to the beef. It does not say anything about what they were fed (Well, usually the exception is Animal protiens)…Hmmm…I have seen protien tubs for cattle labeled natural that have “Hydrolysed Chicken Feathers” as an ingredient…So, even as a producer, a person has to be careful so they are selling what they are representing…

Natural Beef also says nothing about the dry aging process nor where it comes from. It is generally good product, but can vary….I have seen cases of people using the natural abel as an excuse for poor management practices. I have also seen some top notch Natural and Organic operations.

I have not got my website up yet. I spent years in Food processing and have seen the good and bad of Organic and Natural. It does go back to being only as good as the integrity of the person selling it…..

I have no idea of Yummymeats quality and so not take any of this as questioning them. There is a big enough market for good beef for all of us.

I purchased the Yummy Meat pack as it looked so good, well can someone tell me how to get it tender? I have been eating a lot of beef stew lately, since that is the only thing that works, and to think I even purchased a George Foreman grill to no avail!

  9. Anthony Davis said:

Give em a call they will exchange it for free. Mostly tenderness has to do w/ how u thaw it u would be suprised let it thaw in some lukewarm water. cook it slow and don’t stress the meat.

  10. Pat said:

Marie……Sounds like the meat you got may need marinated…Unless you are thawing it with a microwave….

Ours is dry aged for 21 days and we consistently get tons of compliments on the tendernes,

    Good luck

We bought Yummy meats and most of the selections were good a couple were not. I called Yummy Meats got a recording and left a message with my phone number to have a repsentative return my call. I never received any calls from any one at Yummy Meats to address my problem!

My wife bought 1 box of peppercorn filets today from a YM salemsn. He offered the case for $20 so we could try it out. I guess that is rare. We are Costco Smart Meat fans in our home. The YM salesman says YM steaks are as good and cheaper. We’ll see. If they are as good then I will try them again. I can say that SM has been consistantly good over the years. I keep hearing stories of YM being hit and miss for quality. Time will tell if we become long time customers of YM or just pay more for the tried and true SM steaks.

  13. Nancy Carlson said:

this one time at my house a YUMMY MEATS man came flying up my drive way like he lived there and slammed on his brakes……(cloud of dust)….. he began telling me about some steaks or something and i quickly declined the offer…you know salesman though, he showed me the new york strips and holy guacomole….these things looked delicious, YUM, no wonder they call themselves YUMMY MEATS. one week later passed, and my husband and i decided it was time to do the deed, Greg fired up the grill and away we went, i sliced onions and peppers for the yummy steaks, Greg got drunk and forgot about the steaks, bummer……..i didnt get to have any YUMMY MEATS steaks that night. so the following day, i cooked the burnt, left-over steaks in luke warm water for about 15 minutes untill i could smell the YUMMY MEATS steaks. then i ate them and Greg didnt. but overall they were o.k.

  14. Gavin said:

Same story here, opened the door, steaks looked great … $200 later. However, I sadly had a brain hiccup because the final weight of the meat versus the cost that I paid ended up being $8 to $10 per pound, not the $4 per pound they claimed. Looking at the back of my receipt, there was in writing a “Right to Cancel” which was all fine and dandy, but there was no address, just a 800 number and a web site address. Called the 800 number and left a voice mail. Never did get a call back. According to the right to cancel I had to send written notice postmarked within 3 days of the sale. Looked in the phone book and happened to find a Yummy Meats local. So, I called the number – it was a fax machine. I actually found another Yummy Meats number – again, it was a fax machine. It appears that Yummy Meats has no direct voice number. I went to the web site and sent an email, never did get a reply. So I ended up faxing my letter of cancellation to one of the local numbers and I also mailed two letters, one to the local address and to the one that I found on the web site. I have a feeling the local fax and/or local letter did it however because a few days later I got a call and made the arrangements for them to pick up their meat. They obviously tried to talk me out of it. I said no. They promptly handed be a cashier’s check. They kept their word, but trying to get my money back was a bit of pain.

  15. Gavin said:

Just some further comments … I never did try their meat … could have melted in my mouth … the price for me just was not worth it. Also, it would have been nice if their right to cancel would have been more clear. For example, what address to send the letter to would have been great. Their web site currently states nothing about what to do if you have issues. Missing information such as that, to me, makes me a little nervous. Again, it worked out in the end for me – thankfully. So be careful; otherwise, enjoy your meat …

Like everyone else was bombarded by the salesman with great hype of the natural meat and all it’s goodness not to mention the great deal ended up with 2 cases of steak a case of hamburger and a case of chicken so comes the day to try the first which is hamburger AKA steak wanted to use for tacos for the kids dumped a whole packet of seasoning in and still didn’t have any flavor to the 1 patty of beef , tried chicken a couple nights later to which had no flavor also after serious seasoning , only way to get flavor in steak was to fully thaw in sink the marinate for 2.5 days have tried both ways of thawing from 20 minutes in cool water like salesman said to 10 miute thaw in warm water to letting sit in sink most of morning til thaw and still the 2.5 day marinated steak was tuff am still trying to get things settled with representative named Tom from my area hit and miss calls wouldn’t you know to anyone who reads this before buying best thing to do is go to Cosco and buy their meat is quality for sure !!

My husband bought the sales pitch on 5-3-08 We didnt like the meat. the steak was tough and the hamburger was like sponge.
we called and wanted our money back. we benn given the run around for a week now. Not a good business to deal with. their satisfaction is not guaranted. dont do business with this company!

I just purchased two packages… one meat and one fish…After reading these reviews, especially about the flavor of the meat,, I emailed and called the company..(late Saturday). By 8:30 pm they were on my doorstep picking up the item. So, this is just to let you know that they did honor the return. The salesman was a bit disturbed…but that is not my issue.

  19. Stephanie Clark said:

I am really soory you had a bad experiance with this company, however Ihave been buying from them for years and they DO honor the gaurantee, and they have a really good product and the owners are very nice and will do anything to make sure their customers, the only problem is sometimes the contractors they hire get very disgruntle when they get let go from the company, usually for misconduct to customers or because they lied to a customer, its your choice if want to buy from this company, but for me I will continue to buy untill they tick me off or change their product. Just cooked a pair of Yummy Meats filets. Perfect. Tender. Great flavor. Just perfect. I paid $206 for 16 filets (7 oz), 8 small strip steaks (8 oz), five large strip steaks (12 oz), 16 small medallions (2 oz each), and the 8 burgers at 8 oz each. So that was 20 pounds making it $10 a pound.

Assume the burgers were $5.00 a pound for the four pounds, that is $20.

That means I paid $186 for 16.75 lbs of premium NY and Filet; $11.35 a pound.

Where I live, Albertson’s charges $20 for Filets and $15 for NY strip. I don’t know what they charge in the store, but in their delivery program Costo charges $50 a pound for Filet and $25 a pound for NY strip.

, leaving $186 for the steaks.

The Yummy guy was just here a little bit ago. I was just sitting down to dinner. He told me who he was and I thanked him for his intrest and kindly refused his offer, all the time thinking how cold my 1 inch pork chops that I just grilled were getting. I was just wondering about the guy who wrote the letter about smoking his ham and wondering if he ever got it done.

  23. Jan said:

In my experience, they misled me on the quality of their product, they did NOT honor their guarantee, and they have no customer service. When I FINALLY got someone on the phone, they, played dumb. It wasn’t just the delivery guy. The guy I called in Washington was useless as well. As was the gal who called me back in a lame effort to resolve (ha) things.

It’s been a couple years ago now probably ’06, but I was about to make a Costco run to re supply our freezer with steak for grilling and camping so when the Yummy Meats guy showed up, I wasn’t that hard of a sell. I didn’t question the natural organic but wondered what CUT the meat was Prime/Choice…I was told it was better than Prime (resturant grade), it was Primal. Having never heard of that I looked it up and all it means is the chunk of beef from which smaller cuts are made, loin is an example.

We’ll it was the worst excuse for steak I’ve ever had in my life. I went online and tried for weaks to contact the company for an exchange to something else or cancel the order. About 4 weeks later I finally got someone on the phone, and days later a girl called me back to exchange the product. But I was unable to connect with her again to complete the exchange. It was edible, in stew.

I called our local BBB and state AG, there had been some claims files with the AG, but not BBB. I intended to file, but never followed through. I wish I had. They have since stopped by my house 2 times in the last 6 mos. It’s all I can do to not slam the door in their faces.

We had a Yummy Meat guy show up at or door and tell us what we would be getting price per pound and it was a lie. Didn’t figure this out until after the guy left(on a friday). I called saturday 3/28 and got voice message, left a voice message for pick up and sent email for the written notice to cancel. They didn’t call back for 4 days. Finally got the pick up set up and it was for friday 3/27, Amanda from customer service didn’t fax the request until the day of and they had to make arrangements to pick it up on Saturday. We had plans and had to put them on hold until they showed up. The guy who picked up the meat forgot to take a paper with him to show the meat was returned and I was told by Amanda (customer service) that I would receive my refund check in 2 to 3 business days. I waited for 7 days before my husband called their 877 number and left a message. NO response. I left messages on Wednesday and Thrusday with NO call back. Finally I’d had enough and contacted BBB and they told me to fill out a complaint form online. I did. Today I got a call from Amanda, customer service and we had a heated discussion on the phone. She was trying to blame it all on the guy who picked up the product. If she had bothered to call my husband back on tuesday 4/4 then I wouldn’t of gotten so upset. I demanded she give me the owners phone number and she hung up on me.
THEY HAVE THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER HAD THE MISFORTUNE TO COME ACROSS!

    Beware of them people.

We have bought meat from them a few times. Some of the meat was not that great, but when we called to make an exchange, they were quick to take care of the problem. My only complaint about Yummy Meats is why do they have to sell door to door(I hate door to door salesmen). Open up there warehouse and sell in bulk. This also gives the customers a place to exchange or return there purchase if needed

HELLO THIS IS AMANDA, ONE OF THE YUMMY MEATS INC OWNERS/PARTNERS, Just to clarify things here, first off only 7 of the 31 comments are complaints over a three year stretch, every company out their wishes to never have a comlaint from a customer but it is impossiable, we do a extermely high volume of sales everyday and it is very upetting as an owner to know that their is a unhappy customer, however the company and I do our best to satisfy every need of every customer, also the comment about the biker looking guy, we dont have anyone to that decription working for us,if someone from my company looks to be offensive please call me and get a license plate number. Yummy Meats DOES do door to door sales and we are very professional on how we do business we ALSO do internet ordering and mail order, so door to door is a portion of the services we offer. We chose door to door sales as a way of making it convienant for customers to buy food products with FREE HOME DELIVERY. If their is anyone out their that is not happy with my company or services please call me and I promise it will be made right, some of the negative comments on this blog are simply NOT true and if you have not used my services how can you make comments about it, MY CONTACT INFO is 1-877-54YUMMY (1-877-549-8669)MY E-MAIL IS yummymeats@msn.com PLEASE CALL ME FOR ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS!!!!! We love to hear customer feedback on your experiance with our company and work hard everyday to make sure that customers are satisfyed. Also I did ask Cecil to erase this blog due to the fact that some of the comments(such as the ones with my name in it ) are not true and were put their by salesman that work for a differant company that does door to door like us, Cecil said that their was no way for him to know if that was true and so I told him that I respect his decision and left it alone, everyone has the right to their opinion as well as myself, so I just wanted to show everyone that I my company is far from a rip off or scam, and you can call me anytime to ask me questions or if you need any kind of help with your purchase, if your call goes to voice mail PLEASE LEAVE A MESSAGE so your call can be returned, also my website has mailing info, product info and contact info as well, please go to yummymeats.com if you prefer to. And as far as the issue of how the meat is kept, all vans have power invertors inside in which the freezers are plugged into and kept running all day long it is very unlikely that the meat would ever get thawed out and re-frozen while in the care of our workers, and if this was to ever happen it would be very obvious at the time of purchase and would not be sold to ANYONE, and would be discarded properly. ALSO did I mention that every thing you buy from my company has a one year guarantee for taste, tenderness and freezer burn, we replace it for free, we understand that MEAT is an inconsistant product so we go the extra mile to assure that all meat purchased from Yummy Meats is good by offering the replacements. Thankyou very much and again my number is 1-877-54YUMMY (1-877-549-8669)

Evil website owner Cecil here. The above message is almost certainly from Amanda at yummymeats. I for one am happy she chose to address some of the issues raised in the comments. Thank you, Amanda.

Folks, if you have a problem, she gave you the number to call. Give them a chance to do right for you.

I bet I could start a new long annoying thread about Schwanns. Have you seen those prices? Oddly enough, back when I had more money than brains, I bought some. I wasn’t all that happy with my purchase but back then there wasn’t much of a web to complain to.

  34. Jan said:

All the contact info in the world does not help, if all your calls and messages go unreturned, not giving you the chance to work with them to fix the situation. As I said and I stand by it. I called and left messages for WEEKS about an exchange or refund of my poor quality product and when I FINALLY DID speak to someone (Amanda sounds right) I couldn’t get back in touch with her again to complete the follow-up. I finally gave up.

I Bought some of there meat Last Saturday from a salesman on a chance and it seemed like a good deal for what was offered and appearance wise wasnt bad looking, I finally tried 4 of there steaks the other day when I had had some friends over and needless to say I was less than impressed not to say embarrased for serving it. I now have the opinion it was low grade dog food! horrible. Or to use another line from “caddyshack” and Rodney Dangerfield it looked like it still had marks where the jockey was whipping it! I am going to attempt to return the meat today if I can actually locate a real person but I am not looking for any big things to happen from reading the other posts on here. Phone numbers I have already found to be disconnected or of course the one time I actually did get customer service it was the “leave your name and number” and maybe we will get back to you. I will hopefully have my money returned and will file this under lessons learned! I can assure you one thing I will not ever be recommending these people to anyone else and if I ever see that van parked on the street by my residence I will physically walk the neighborhood and warn anyone i can.

Yummy Meat salesman shows up at my doorstep at 830pm. I have no idea who he is but I can see his van with Yummy Meats written on it. He asks what kind of steak I like, I tell him. That’s all he says, no “Can I tell you about our specials?”, “Could I show you some of our meat?”, not even an intoduction. He just turns around heads for his van and calls back to me, “I have something for you to try.” Not sure what this whole thing is even about, I wait inside my house with the screen door shut. He returns with a buddy both carrying card board boxes. They practically walk into my house asking “Do you have someplace we could set this down?” Thank goodness I kept my screen door shut! When it was rather obvious I was not letting them in my house, the original guy started his pitch and I finally figured out what they are even trying to do. Scared the crap out of me, I was sure they were criminals just trying to gain access to my house! No way I would purchase anything from this company even if it was the greatest meat ever! I know door to door salesmen have to be creative but this was way overboard!

Very unimpressed with Yummy meats. I got 2 boxes cordon blu, 3 boxes of strips, and 1 box of breasts. He charged me $175. If I buy the EXACT same thing from the Schwans man I get 2 extra cordon blu’s and it only cost me $115. Never again will I buy yummy meats.

Just had a visit from YUMMYMEATS.com guys canvasing our neighborhood well after dark. Not a good time to go door to door when you are not known in the area. The guy that came to our house tried very hard to get us to try his product. We had never heard of the company. He said he was in the area making deliveries and decided to introduce us to a great product. Well, after haseling with our dogs so we could even hear what he had to say we listened respectfully to his pitch and then told him “no”. (The price for us tonight would be $4.00 per pound, not the usual $10 – $15 per pound)
That was his claim. I decided to look up the web site that was so prominently displayed on their van and found this blog. For Cecil, Thank you for putting the info out there for us to see. For Amanda, be assured we would not buy food from someone we don’t know, who shows up at our doorstep, without an appointment, at night… Not a very good way to run a business IMHO shakey at best, scammy at worst.

i myself have been a very very satisfied customer of yummy meats for quite some time. to find these reports and comments from (supposed) customers is hard to believe.for over three years now i have been able to do whatever i like when it comes to making my orders just the way i like them. with the people saying the way they run things is absurd,i dont know if you’ve noticed, but they were doing a whole bunch of stuff down at the BSU stadium giving away FREE FOOD to the community like burgers and hot dogs and stuff. i have a friend who works down at one of the missions who said they are down there quite frequently donating food to help out.these guys are popping up all over town doing charity work sponsoring events (anybody ever go and watch the MMA tournaments?) how about all of the promotional suff with the local radio stations for all the stuff they give away to the things they do for people around the holidays that dont have anything?(ever hear of a secret santa?)and all the other miscelaneous things they do for people here in the community. now about christmas time last year(speaking of holidays) i decided to see if the grass was greener on the other side and i went and tried another local company, needless to say you could probably get a better steak dinner at sharis. i couldnt get ahold of anyone from their company to do anything for me.(it’s very hard to talk to a fax machine).feeling like i had been totally ripped off, i called amanda at yummy meats and explained the situation to see if she could help me track them down,(which by the way she did) now keep in mind this was not yummy meats products, she actually had a representative come out to my house and replace all the CRAP i had gotten from the other company with yummy products and not just a few boxes either, they matched the amount of product i had purchased box for box and brought me a BIG box of breakfast stuff too!i honestly dont think there is another company here in this whole darn state that would do that for thier customers, honestly, could you imagine the fit costco would have if u showed up out there with some stuff from fred meyers? and expected them to help u replace it? probaly not gonna happen!lol i thought that was totally cool. anyways, the point i’m getting at is the fact that no matter what, for the money, the quality, the price, you cant beat it!don’t believe me?do your own homework on some of your local super market meat departments.especially, on what they charge for ALL NATURAL BEEF. my girlfriend and i did,can u believe that there are places that’ll charge anywhere from 14-22 dollars a pound?! as for me and my girl we’ve found our company, i would’nt have it any other way!!! i’d recommend these guys to anybody,so to the people out there that havent tried these guys out yet…. keep an eye out for em! you dont know what your missing!!!

I find it odd that some defenders of YummyMeats tend to get into long disconnected rants late at night, and attempt to shift the conversation to something else (charity and good deeds). It comes across as the kind of astroturf posting they accuse that other company of doing.

There’s only one question that hasn’t been answered – WHAT IS THE USDA GRADE for the beef in the box you buy? Select, Choice or Prime? YM paid for the inspection (mandated by law) so YM knows the answer. Natural is a claim that has no meaning. Hormones are natural. Salmonella is natural. Corn feed and grass feed are natural. A dumpster load of fermenting of feed slop is natural. Natural means nothing.

What is the USDA grade? Without that information we can’t make a choice between a bargain and rip-off

this is obviously a fake page you all sound like a bunch of cry babies, too much going on in america right now to be worried about competition between a bunch of cry babies and fake statementz. it was too easy for me to write this letter with no proof of ever using this company**whatever get over it**if you have a real complaint go to the **BBB** at least they require real proof so customers can see REAL complaints and you have a better chance of getting results rather than complain to a computer LMAO

  44. admin said:

Walter: No, it’s a real page. Actually, I have the IP number and the reverse DNS you posted from. From that I make a decision to delete or leave a comment.

When consumers report their experiences with a product or service, we all learn. Including the business owner if they would think it through.

The BBB and websites are a problem when it comes to door to door sales. Who is going tell the salesman, “Give me 30 minutes to call the BBB and run a Google search on you”? They should, but they aren’t going to. You can’t trust BBB anymore than the people commenting here. There’s a well known conflict of interest with how BBB operates. This is not the place to discuss that however.

I just unthawed a package of so-called “filet”. Once I opened the pkg, I discovered it was in fact four pieces clumped together to appear as one piece of meat. What a rip off. We tried other portions that were included in our purchase and found they tasted awful. I am wondering if they use horse meat? because it sure doesn’t taste like any other steak I’ve ever eaten. Its awful!!! DO NOT BUY!!!!! I am also reporting these folks to Consumers Affairs and any other organization I can think of. They need to be put out of business.

I saw this post concerning the Yummy meat company and figured I would put my two cents in on the deal. I myself was in the door to door meat business for quite a few years. I do not know a lot about Yummy meats other than I think they used to be called Land and Sea foods. I worked for quite a few companies and the basic run down is pretty much the same. companies hire independent contractors and provide them with vehicles and all that is needed for dooor to door sales. They product that is carried by these contractors is not paid for in advance. lol now we get to the part where you are gonna get pissed. When a contractor sells you a case of beef he will have to pay the company anywhere from $110.00 to $145.00 chicken and pork are usally alittle less. After working for companies for awhile I started to bump into independents. (people who buy from a supplier and sell on their own). If you are so lucky to be given this knowledge in a company situation and have some capital you will find that you can purchase beef packs anywhere from $55.00 dollars on up to $70.00. I have found chicken and pork packs for as low as $45.00 on up to $60.00. I have been out of the bussines for quite awhile now but if you really wanna stock up on meat do alittle homework. I know there is a cold storage in Grandview.

  47. admin said:

Thanks for the info, Rick. It fills in some missing information. If the YM sales person has to pay for the box after the sale, they could negotiate on price to the end customer, subject to whatever T&C’s YM puts on them to maintain the price. That’s going to be a source of headaches for all involved.

I know enough about the food business that your price points are probably accurate if you can buy wholesale (or even at food service prices)

  48. Rick said:

Well figured I would put it out there for folks, and be forewarned you will catch a lot flak with that post since this site comes up directly under a search quarry of Yummy Meats. As they do hold a virtual monoply on the business here. Their drivers and customers are none the less wise. One more thing if you do buy from a meat sales person espescially in the summer months. I would advise to anyone that if the case that is shown to you is open, you should ask for a sealed box. It is highly likely that the meat has been shown to other people multiple times. I have worked in management in this business so if anyone has any questions please feel free to ask.

Yeah, I seem to be the “go-to” site for yummymeats complaints. I’ve had some email back and forths with one of the owners. They are a touch sensitive about public feedback.

Their source is a packer in the tri-cities area. Perhaps the one you mentioned in Grandview Wa. I’m not going to name the firm here because they haven’t done anything wrong. They fill the YM order to YM specs, I assume. What YM orders (the grade of beef), YM has never stated. Hinted, but never stated). Email me for further discussion should you care too. Here is an interesting situation, I had a man come by today from I think he said home meat mart.com but when I answered my door he said, don’t worry I am not the guys in the vans. I was like excuse me what does that mean? So he told me his name it was mike I believe and said that he was with this home meat mart.com and gave me his speal, I pretty much knew what he was here for and told him that I buy from Yummy Meats he got so angry and told me to look them up on the computer and see what has been said from customers. I kindly told him I was busy and had no money right now and would look it up later and call him for a meat order later on when I can afford it, he refused to show me a price list and business card and told me that if I got online and looked up this information he would give me free hamburgers and chicken if I wrote a complaint on this very website, I told him that i was very happy with Yummy meats and had no issues with them, so he proceeded to tell me that he would give me an entire case of chicken if I did it anyways so they would stop stealing his customers alon with several other angry comments about them, I had had enough and told him to leave or I was going to call his boss and tell them what he was trying to do. So after he left I continued to read the rest of the replys on here and found some clues as to why alot of this back and forth angy employee stuff is going on, the man that came here told me that Yummy Meats was called land and Seafood at one time and said that some of his co-workers were fired from the company a while ago, I dont know why he was tring so hard to bash all the other places but I have bought from both of those companies they are two completely differant companies so now I was thinking to myself that he probably was told to say those things by someone because he did’t know what he was talking about and I think that the Rick guy on here is the same man that I talked to today because it sounds just like the things he was telling me at my home. I lost yummy Meats phone number but I see that the owner left a number so I will try to call them and see if they are aware of this guy going around telling people to make false complaints on their company and if anyone has the number to Land and Seafood please email me with the phone number because I will call them as well my email is NurseRachelRN@ymail.com I would like to know if any of these replys are valid and I think Walter is right about all of this but I would like Pat to email me about the organic vs natural it would be nice if you could educate me on that I thought it was all the same. If anyone else sees this man I would say morally it is wrong to take something for free based on lies and you will probably get sick if you eat it, its just how mother nature works, I needed that free chicken bad but i will not compromise my morals for anyone. I have been reading all of your reviews. I bought a pack from yummy meats about a year ago. It was a big chunk of money for me to spend (especially with a family of five). However, I LOVED it!! It was high quality meat. I can honestly say everyone in my family loved it. Since then we have moved about 20 miles. I know we are still in the delivery area. I am just waiting for the yummy meat guy to show up some day. I will DEFINATELY buy from him again if he can make me a good deal. I wish there website showed any specials they were running. The meat was tender, convenient, and soo good. It really does boil down to how you defrost it. If you follow the directions given to you buy the salesman, it turns out amazing. I am a huge yummy meats fan!

My wife who has a brain tumor and doesn’t now think as clearly as she once did bought what she thought was 2 or 3 boxes of Yummy Meats. She gave the salesman a credit card. He charged a great sum of money and left our freezer full to the top with meat. When my wife contacted the same salesman to return the excess meat that she did not order he brought 2 more new cases of meat in to sell to her. Then he said he could not take back any meat but we could call the “customer service” number and they would take care of it. We called and left messages and no calls were ever returned. This is a SCAM ORGANIZATION that should not be allowed to be in business. DON’T MAKE THE MISTAKE OF PURCHASING MEAT FROM THESE DISHONEST PEOPLE.

We just bought a box of chicken breasts from Yummy Meats. The salesperson told my husband that they were free-range organic chicken breasts. I’m sure my husband asked him specifically if they were because it is the only kind of chicken meat I will buy. I can find nothing on Yummy Meats website to say that they buy free-range chicken meat. So I’m guessing we were told whatever the salesman knew we wanted to hear. In this respect I feel lied to and will not purchase meat from them again. However, I will try the meat we bought and post what we thought of it.

I just had the worst door to door salesman experience with this place. The guy came to the door and I politely said I was not interested as I was on the phone and had a kid in the other arm.

As I am closing the door, he runs out to his van and grabs 2 large boxes of meat. He comes back and I tell him again I am not interested. He doesn’t take no for an answer and asks if I have a table inside that he can show me the meat. I said, no way, and he still continues to open 12 boxes of meat on my front porch. He then starts asking me where do I shop, how many people live in my house, how to I pay for food, stuff like that. He continues to tell me it is $389 for the pack of meat. I had figured him out long before this and knew he was going to tell me he could accept any form of payment. As I continue to tell him I am not interested, he says he will run out to the van and get me a receipt. At this point, I let him run out and I went in and closed and locked the door and let him pack up his meat.

This was the worst salesperson I have ever had and I will be sure to go out of my way to make sure and tell people not to use them. I have also called their number and asked to be removed from their list. Funny side note, the person I was on the phone with who also lives in my neighborhood had heard about them. I mentioned he was at my door and he said for sure don’t buy from them because you will have nothing but problems as he had heard from others.

I had a great experience with a YM sales representative earlier today. He was knowledgeable and courteous. I purchased a case of meat from him and hope that it is as good as expeted. The above comments have me concerned but all in all I think quantity for cost I got a fair deal….could I have done better price wise? probably, but having him bring it to the house and put it away for me added value for me. Anyway – they seem a reputable company and my salesman was great.

The meat looks good all vac sealed, but I won’t be trying it until tomorrow. I do a lot of reviews on Sazze (not a plug, but I’m active there and you can judge my tastes from my reviews). OK, I’ve had enough time to do some grillin’. First I did up a couple burgers (sold as 90/10 ground sirloin. I’ve had some sirloin burger before, and this does pale in comparison. But, it was a good burger overall. One of the selling points was “this will not shrink as you cook it”. I knew that was a lie, it’s still 10% fat, and fat cooks off. With that, it was still a tasty and filling burger. I’d rank it with Albertson’s Stockman and Dakota burger. Last night we did up the ribeyes. These were far more disappointing than the burger. They weren’t horrible, but they were pretty chewy. My grilling skills might be under fire, but I thought I did them up just about right. We like ours rare, so I couldn’t mess up too badly. I’ve definitely been taken, but not so much that it hurts. Next month I’ll buy a BBQ meat pack from Choice Cuts or Meats Royale like I intended.

We have bought twice from them and I think the are delicious. So tender. I thaw in the sink with cold water. Sometimes we marinade and sometimes we dry rub. Always good though. My boyfriend used to work in a meat market so he knows what he is looking for when he picks out meat and he seems to think they are good quality. I just wish (like everyone else) they would list what “all natural” means and what the USDA grade is. We also ordered their seafood and it was good too. I have no complaints about them. One of their vans did block me at a gas station once and I couldn’t move so they could have my spot and they gave me a dirty look, but that wasn’t my fault.

THE REASON PEOPLE SAY HIT OR MISS IS BECAUSE THE PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY MISS OR THE STEAKS ARE BAD JUST TO BE FRANK CAN’T COOK STEAK… I HAVE ATE OLD, NEW, GREAT LOOKING, BAD LOOKING, STEAKS THAT PEOPLE RETURNED FROM 10 MONTHS BEFORE AND THEY HAVE ALL BEEN AMAZING. SO JUST A HELPFUL HINT PUT IN COLD NOT LUKE WARM NOT HOT BUT COLD WATER FOR 10-20 MINUTES, COOK ON HIGH HEAT SEAR BOTH SIDES FOR 1 OR 2 MINUTES, THEN LOWER HEAT AND COOK TO YOUR DESIRE… WITH OR WITHOUT MARINADES I CAN GUARANTEE YOUR STEAKS WILL NEVER LEAD YOU ASTRAY IF YOU FOLLOW THESE STEPS.. NEVER DEFROST IN THE FRIDGE OR STAB YOUR STEAK WITH A FORK OR ANY STABBING UTENSIL -NO BUENO. HOWEVER WITH ALL OF THAT SAID IF THE STEAKS ARE LIKE A LIGHT RED ORANGE DO NOT EAT THIS HAPPENS IF THEY HAVE THAWED AND BEEN REFROZEN. YUMMY MEATS IS A GREAT COMPANY IF YOU HAVE BEEN WRONGED BY THEM BLAME THE SALES MAN NOT THE COMPANY THERE ARE NO SMOKY MIRRORS WITH THE COMPANY THEY ARE VERY LEGIT AND KEEP IN MIND WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE ISSUES THEY HAVE A TON OF CUSTOMERS SO EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT CONTACTED IN A TIMELY MANNER CALL BACK IT TAKES 2 MINUTES OF YOUR LIFE IT WILL BE OK… YOU WILL GET TAKEN CARE OF.

First it was $380 for the box, then it was $65 per little box of individual cuts, as long as I bought 4 boxes. I only like certain cuts, so they opened the boxes and I’ve never seen such freeze dried chunky white fat meat before in my life.

One of the sales “GUYS” said they were on the same level as Costco meats. What?

Never mind the price. Sorry, raised on a farm, know my meat, and for that quality and price? No wonder they have poor customer support, and do DRIVE BY’s only.

I will never buy from Yummy Meats again. Worst experience ever. Similar story as many above- come to house late evening (9pm) “I saw your lights were still on…” pile the meat in front of you, talk fast, etc. If I had thought it through- I would have figured price per pound- not per serving. I was lured in by the statement that it was “all natural”. Steve (sales guy) even said the chicken was free range – grown by the Menonite? in Washington state. I am concerned about the antibiotics and excessive use of hormones and just by the poor treatment of animals grown for meat – so yeah- my bad- I bought the $189 chicken pack. It had 6 boxes and each box had about 4 servings per box.
Well- as I was putting it into my freezer I noticed one of the packaging was damaged- hole a little smaller than a dime. I called Steve- he said he was in Wyoming today and asked me to call the 800# so they could fax him a work order. Interestingly enough-
Amanda’s 1-877-549-8669 number has a full mailbox and I was unable to leave a message. I called Steve back, but I figure he tagged my phone number as “angry customer” and isn’t going to call me back. This place is a JOKE. The one thing I want to know is where is their meat coming from. I don’t believe it is free range chicken living the good life. I think they are getting it from cheap slaughter houses. The meat isn’t that great. I tried the lemon pepper chicken breast- I was told it was “flavor infused” WTF? – It was really bland. I am in South East Idaho – watch out for these guys if they come to your door.
